If you are not interested in reading an entire book on Thoroughbred racing, but would like some local color and some stories to tell at a Derby party, or to enhance your enjoyment of the race toward this year's Triple Crown, this 15 page collection of articles is for you! Bob shares his unique insight into the Thoroughbred industry by recounting his hilarious experiences with owners, breeders, and others involved in the racing industry.

Author Bob Treadway began his legal career in Lexington, Kentucky, a newly minted graduate of Harvard Law School, beginning his practice with one of the largest and most prestigious law firms in Kentucky.

During the next twenty years, before his own legal career was destroyed by a bout of mental illness, which left him disbarred and a convicted felon, Bob led a Damon Runyon-like life among the glitterati of the Thoroughbred world.

For less than the cost of a two dollar bet, read an article length (15 pages) collection of four of Bob's original columns, which have appeared on KyForward.com, Lexington's community internet newspaper, which features extensive reporting on the Thoroughbred industry, Kentucky's most prestigious and well known business.

In an engaging style, Bob tells us, in about 8,500 words:

The story of the 1989 Derby duel between the great runners Sunday Silence and Easy Goer, and the more dramatic battle between the Hancock brothers. The upstart Arthur Hancock, III, bred Sunday Silence, a hard luck horse whom no one gave a chance at the Derby, and Seth Hancock, breeder of Easy Goer, the better bred and better regarded of the two. Bob was in the thick of things, as part of the legal team behind Sunday Silence, led by the incomparable Paul Sullivan, a legend in Kentucky in corporate law -- and horse racing.

Bob then tells us his hilarious personal experiences at the 1994 Derby, where Arthur Hancock, III, made another appearance, with the great runner Strode's Creek, beaten by two lengths by Go for Gin. Bob's own experiences at the Derby, with a group of eccentric friends with not quite enough tickets to get in are funnier than the race!

While still a young lawyer, Bob became legal counsel to Tom Gentry, the horse breeder and salesman who revolutionized the Thoroughbred sales industry. Bob catches him on a long strange trip to Los Angeles, involving horses, and other pleasures, and gives us some insight into what makes a great salesman tick.

Finally, Bob, who grew up in the mountains of Appalachia himself, profiles the Hall of Fame trainer Woody Stephens, whose record of winning five back to back Belmont Stakes races may never be duplicated.

Each of these articles appears on KyForward.com, the Lexington-based internet community newspaper for whom Bob writes a regular column on local history, focusing on the history of the Thoroughbred horse business, and of the Kentucky Derby.
