I read several reviews of the this book before reading it, decided to purchase it because I am hiker also and enjoy reading other people's experiences. The common theme with the negative reviews was they thought the book was overly "preachy"...I personally did not find that and I thought the references to religion were mostly to give the reader some back ground into the authors up bringing. 95% of the book is about his adventure on the trail and dealing with emotional pain that many seek to remedy on the trail, he is not the first nor the last to unplug from the world to find an answer to tragedy. If you are overly sensitive to the moderate religious references in his writing you seriously need to re-evaluate your life and way of thinking, now days everyone is "offended" for ridiculous reasons. If you enjoy reading about the AT and hiking in general I would consider this to be in the top 5, hiking can be repetitive and not translate well into words...hike, eat, drink, sleep repeat. This book is anything but that
I think this book is worth reading. I had heard about people hiking the entire Appalachian Trail and I thought I would like to do that someday. So I started to do some research and purchased a few books on hiking the AT. This is one of the books I purchased. After reading this book, I am rethinking about hiking the trail, but I still really liked the book. I liked Paul's personal story, but I also really enjoyed the hiking stories and the different experiences along the AT. I can see how many people start hiking the AT but never finish it. I also really enjoyed hearing about the "trail magic" and how willing people are to help out the hikers. The only thing I wanted to know more about was the cost of the trip. It was not always clear what was free and what was paid for, but this book was more about the journey and not about how to hike the trail. Anyway, I thought it was a good read and I will have my kids read it as well. Thanks Paul for a great story and sharing a part of your life.
Yes it has a spiritual message in it but I did not feel that it took over the story. I read a lot of books on hiking and walking and to be honest you can only hear so many stories on how hard it is or how many blisters they got. So putting a spiritual message into it was really a nice change. If you think about it walking and hiking long distance is mostly done to find answers or direction in life. As he found on the trail there were many stories of people who lost loved ones were the thru hikers. I loved it and would recommend to all ages who enjoy being outside and appreciate all that has been given to us.
There is so much of our stories that we share on the AT, yet so much different -- but perhaps all our lives are like that? The Trail, the long thread of good hearted folk who keep it alive, and the hikers themselves have the good fortune to live pressed together for a while and recognize what we all share. The author does a great job of evoking the obsessions that many thru hikers have -- eating at well known locales, pressing on in the face of weather, staying on the "purist" path, and making miles every day. In order to finish the entire Trail in one year, they push aside distractions like medical problems, fellow hikers who fall behind, succor for stray animals, and family events -- and become one of a small community.
A friend recommended this book for me. A very good read and I thoroughly enjoyed it, reading the entire book in a little over 2 1/2 days (I'm retired). I like his outlook on life and the circumstances of how he handled the passing of his dear wife. I feel for him. I can relate to the school of hard knocks as I have attended it too. My original family is dead except for one surviving brother. Been to all four corners of the U.S., many foreign countries, flown supersonic in F-4 Phantoms, 100 miles in one day on a bicycle, and survived a horrendous motorcycle accident. I wrote my autobiography titled as "F-4 Phantom Crew Chief - Sam Lassiter's Vietnam Saga" and I look forward to reading Paul's "Biking Across America" book.
I've never read a hiking book before, so I wondered if this book would interest me. It was amazing and I couldn't put it down. Paul Stutzman is a terrific story teller and his honest account of walking the Appalachian Trail captivated me from the first to the last page.Paul's book is not just about the hike but is also a journey in dealing with loss and grief. He writes with intense feeling which I deeply respected and enjoyed. The author also describes the Appalachian scenery in wonderful detail. He also introduces his readers to a great bunch of fellow hikers whose characteristics make the whole book immensely enjoyable.
